Notification Center

A centralized hub for updates, alerts, and team notifications—designed to bring clarity to a complex platform.

Introduction

I redesigned a forgotten “What’s New” page into a centralized Notification Center—giving users one place to find product updates, messages from New Relic, and notifications from their teammates. This helped cut through the noise across the app and made onboarding and ongoing communication clearer and more effective.

Problem

The app had no consistent way to talk to users. Each team built their own messaging patterns, and the only real communication channel was email—which wasn’t reliable or scalable. Our existing “What’s New” page was outdated and barely used.

Goal

Create a unified, in-app notification experience that improves communication, supports onboarding, and helps users discover value faster.

My Role

I led UX and UI design for the Notification Center as part of a cross-functional team. I partnered daily with our PM and engineering lead to explore ideas, work through constraints, and present our work to stakeholders. I collaborated with the design systems and UX writing teams to ensure consistency and clarity. While the project was ultimately paused before launch, I’m proud of the process, the vision we created, and the collaboration it took to build it.

UI Highlights

Message Types

I used a familiar inbox-style layout with visual message types—making it easier for users to scan, prioritize, and act on what mattered without cognitive overload.

Empty State That Reinforces Value

The “All caught up!” message added a touch of personality and helped users feel in control—turning a functional moment into a small reward.

“New for You” vs “History”

Splitting messages into “New for You” and “History” helped reduce noise. Users could focus on fresh information while still having access to older updates when needed.

Inline Actions for Real Tasks

Some messages included contextual actions like “Approve Upgrade” and “Review Request,” allowing users to handle tasks immediately without jumping between pages.

Conclusion

The Notification Center aimed to solve a long-standing problem at New Relic: fragmented communication. By creating a unified system with clear structure, contextual actions, and thoughtful design, we made it easier for users to stay informed and take action—right inside the product. While the project was ultimately paused, it laid the groundwork for a scalable, human-centered messaging system that the platform sorely needed.
